Hamptons Cigar Manufactory & Museum produced its first cigar in 2014 and now offers five lines of gourmet cigars in a variety of blends and sizes. These cigars, known mainly on eastern Long Island, have won a loyal following there. It’s easy to see why.

The Enigma is a consciously premium product, and at $12 a stick it is not overpriced. Dense, firm, substantial, and attractive, this cigar exudes a prized scent right out of the cellophanethe symphonic perfume of a walk-in humidor, a promising fragrance for any cigar to radiate.

It features a flawless blond Connecticut wrapper leaf with all-Dominican binder and filler. The double-capped head receives a clean punch cut, allowing a perfect draw. The all long-filler construction is superlative. On squeezing the cigar, you’ll find just a slight, evenly spread springiness — sign of a solid stick.

On light-up the Enigma asserts itself immediately with shouts of cedar and black coffee. This is not a bashful smoke, nor a thin one. Each puff is rewarded with generous clouds of chewy smoke. Within ten minutes a pleasant hint of jalapeño joins the profile. Burn quality is utterly perfect. Twenty minutes in, the ash shows no sign of dropping; it bears the appearance of gray granite, tempering the coal and slowing the pace. And now comes a tasty dash of Connecticut cream to leaven the coffee flavor. At 30 minutes we finally break off a still perfectly formed two-inch ash and remove the band.

This “Segar” knows who it is. The same flavors earlier noted continue to reign well into the second half, but a growing base of caramel soon enters the picture, with just enough natural sugar to harmonize the flavors — binding the profile and deepening the smoke into a buttery-smooth concoction. You’ll hang on to this cigar down to a scalding nub. The last puff (and maybe the best) comes at 80 minutes for a gluttonous smoker, though it could last longer if paced deliberately. Even an hour after the end, a most agreeable, sweet afterglow lingers on the palate. What a splendid show!

The Enigma is aptly named. Such a stout smoke cloaked in a blond form comes as something of a surprise. This cigar recommends itself to epicures seeking a rich capstone to a fine meal with dessert. The complexities of the smoke suggest that these cigars should age beautifully. Now we know why the Hamptons set is filling humidors with boxes of them. Get yours through the company website.
